Project Management

The current economic climate is requiring a wide range of organisations to instigate radical change in a short period of time, both in the public and private sector. These changes need to be effectively project managed in order to ensure that the benefits of change are achieved quickly, without incurring avoidable costs or delays and without unnecessary disruption in the delivery of existing services.

Common Causes of Project Failure:

  • Lack of clear links between the project and the organisations key strategic priorities, including agreed measure of success.
  • Lack of clear senior management ownership and leadership
  • Lack of effective engagement with stakeholders
  • Lack of skills and proven approach to project management and risk management
  • To little attention to breaking development and implementation into manageable steps
  • Evaluation of proposal driven by initial price rather than the long term value of money (especially securing delivery of business benefits)
  • Lack of understanding of, and contact with the supply industry at senior levels in the organisation
  • Lack of effective project team integration between clients, the supplier team and the supply chain

What is Project Management?

A process that utilises the appropriate resources and skills of the organisation to successfully achieve specific objectives with clearly defined benefits. Any process requires the application of discipline if it is to achieve its purpose. The manager of this process is the project manager who must have the necessary people management and technical skills to ensure success. The project manager must create a sustained climate of continuous focus on the project objectives and benefits.
