People Development

“For a change initiative to succeed, it has to have the buy-in of the people concerned. Their feelings, emotions, beliefs and values have to be part of the change initiative itself.” – Hugh Brawley, Gower Handbook of Teamworking

The global market is changing rapidly. new technologies, markets and competition are revolutionising business relationships. In an attempt to survive, organisations are blurring traditional boundaries in response to a more fluid business environment. Therefore the roles of individuals, teams and leaders have become more blurred and ambiguous. Increasingly, organisations will depend on the knowledge worker more than the physical worker for survival. Required are self-reliant, adaptable people who can communicate, cooperate and develop new skills, knowledge and coalitions or partnerships as the market place evolves.

Today, because of the long-term emphasis on short-term goals of productivity and profit, many organisations have decided to rationalise to remain competitive. This rationalisation obliges fewer people to produce more and adapt quickly, though the negative effects of rationalisation on people is to move them more deeply into behaviours and limiting beliefs that create shells or compartments which feel safe, unconsciously endangering themselves and the whole organisation.

Paradoxically, the pressures which cause rationalisation also underline the importance of the contribution people make to the an organisation; at a time when economic pressures are greatest, to survive organisations  needs individuals and teams to be at their most creative.
